Name
Manganese oxide 92%, MnO2, Pyrolusite
Information
Manganese oxide is an inorganic compound of black to brownish-black color. In nature, it most commonly occurs as the mineral pyrolusite (tetragonal system – the most important manganese ore). It is a strong oxidizing agent, which is completely insoluble in water and organic solvents.
Usage
Manganese oxide is primarily used in the glass industry for decolorizing glass (neutralizing the greenish tint of iron) or for coloring it purple. In ceramics, it is popular as a pigment for glazes and clay bodies. It also finds applications in the production of dry galvanic cells (batteries), in construction for coloring concrete, and in laboratories as a catalyst for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen.
